Stages of alcohol addiction treatment
First, the person needs to accept that they are ill and need medical help. This is not always easy. If relatives cannot cope on their own, a psychologist can visit the home and conduct an intervention — a special procedure that leads to the person’s voluntary consent to treatment.
The doctor cleanses the body with an IV drip and prescribes medications that help improve the condition of the organs and relieve symptoms.
At this stage, medications are used to relieve agitation and dangerous disorders of the nervous system and internal organs. This is strongly recommended in a hospital setting, although detoxification can sometimes be done at home.
Coding is performed with medications (such as disulfiram or naltrexone), hypnosis or other suggestion methods. It is only one stage of treatment: it addresses physical dependence, but psychological dependence must then be overcome and the results consolidated.
Rehabilitation includes the well-known 12-step program and other psychotherapeutic methods, art and occupational therapy, and general strengthening. This stage is the most difficult and the longest. Some people find relief after one short course, while others need long-term support.
